Vying with white-wine producing appellations like Bergundy, Veneto and California, Hungary is quietly garnering a reputation as hosting some of the best wineries in the world. Here we’ll share the unique qualities of the Unesco World Heritage-protected Tokaj wine country and Lake Balaton region.
Hungarian Wines

Hungary’s wine story is a tale of landscape, legend, and centuries of craftsmanship – one of Europe’s most captivating yet still delightfully under-the-radar wine cultures.
In the northeast lies the historic Tokaj Wine Region, celebrated for its luminous golden wines, naturally sweetened by the gentle touch of a unique benign fungus. So revered were these wines that France’s Louis XIV famously declared Tokaj to be “the wine of kings, the king of wines.” Today, the region continues to enchant wine lovers with both its legendary sweet wines and an impressive range of elegant dry styles.
Further west, the vibrant vineyards surrounding Lake Balaton tell a different but equally compelling story. With winemaking roots stretching back to Roman times, this expansive region thrives under the lake’s moderating climate. Signature varieties like Olaszrizling flourish in the region’s diverse volcanic and limestone soils, delivering aromatic white wines that are fresh, mineral-driven, and irresistibly food-friendly.
Together, Tokaj and Balaton represent the soul of Hungarian wine – heritage, innovation, and a sense of place captured in every glass.
Hungary’s Grape Varieties

Furmint – Hungary’s flagship grape, Furmint offers high acidity, citrus and orchard fruit, with mineral depth. Structured and versatile, it excels in both dry and sweet styles with strong ageing potential.
Hárslevelű – Aromatic and elegant, Hárslevelű shows floral, honeyed notes with soft stone fruit. Rounder than Furmint, it adds fragrance and finesse to both blends and varietal wines.

Italian Riesling (Olaszrizling) – Light and refreshing, Italian Riesling delivers crisp acidity with green apple and citrus flavours. Typically dry and approachable, it’s an easy-drinking, versatile food companion.
Rhine Riesling – A noble grape known for precision and longevity, offering citrus, green apple, and mineral notes. Styles range from dry to sweet, always balanced by vibrant acidity.
Sárgamuskotály – Highly aromatic, Sárgamuskotály bursts with floral, grape, and citrus notes. Often off-dry or sweet, it’s vibrant, fragrant, and immediately appealing.
Tokaj Region

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tokaj has been enchanting wine enthusiasts for centuries. The magic of Tokaji lies in a remarkable natural phenomenon known as the ‘noble rot’ (botrytis cinerea). Under the region’s unique climate – misty mornings followed by warm afternoons – grapes slowly shrivel and concentrate their sugars and flavours, producing wines of remarkable richness and balance. The result is the legendary Tokaji Aszú – a luscious nectar bursting with notes of honey, apricot, citrus, and spice, layered with vibrant acidity that keeps every sip lively and elegant.
Today, Tokaji remains a UNESCO-recognised historic wine region and one of the world’s most captivating expressions of terroir – an enchanting fusion of history, nature, and craftsmanship in every glass.
Lake Balaton

Few places in Europe capture the romance of wine quite like Lake Balaton. Framed by volcanic hills and shimmering water, the vineyards encircling Central Europe’s largest lake form one of Hungary’s most dynamic wine landscapes, where ancient tradition meets modern creativity. At the heart of the region is Olaszrizling, Balaton’s signature grape, celebrated for crisp acidity, delicate fruit, and an expressive sense of place.
What makes Balaton wines so captivating is the region’s natural harmony. The vast, yet shallow, lake moderates the continental climate – softening winters, cooling hot summers, and reflecting sunlight onto the vines – while nearby hills shield the vineyards from harsh winds. Combined with diverse soils ranging from volcanic basalt to limestone and loess, this terroir produces wines of striking freshness, minerality, and aromatic complexity.
